What's The Best Time To Take Vitamins?
Dear Sage,
There are so many different theories out there about when I should be taking my vitamins during the day and what I should be swigging them down with so that I get maximum benefit. I’m confused! Any advice?

Good question! And the answer depends on what kind of supplements you’re taking. First, if you take a multivitamin, according to natural Nutritionist Mary Beth Augustine R.D., CDN, the best thing to do is pick a convenient time of day that works for your schedule so you remember to pop your pill daily. Try storing your vitamins in a visible place (bedside table or next to your toothbrush) so you won’t forget to take them. Also, since certain foods block absorption of nutrients and minerals, keep the following basics in mind when planning your supplement schedule:

  • Calcium supplements are best taken after a meal.

  • Iron absorption is enhanced by vitamin-C rich foods and fermented foods, and blocked by caffeine, eggs, milk and fiber. Take your iron supplement before bedtime with a small glass of OJ for maximum benefit.

  • Take fat-soluble vitamins—A, D, E, K—with a meal containing fat for best absorption.

  • Fiber blocks the absorption of many minerals, so avoid taking mineral supplements with a high fiber meal.

Lastly, avoid taking your vitamins at the same time as your other medications. And need we remind you—just because you’re taking supplements doesn’t mean it’s a free for all on fast food. Remember, a healthy, well-balanced diet is always a great way to get your needed nutrients!
