The Lean And Mean on Caffeine
Y/N: Do you look like Cruella De Vil before your 8 AM cup of joe?
Y/N: Is your idea of the perfect alarm clock the blissful sound of your coffeemaker?
Y/N: Do you visit your favorite barista twice before lunch (ok, and maybe once after)?

If you answered yes to two or more of those questions, then sorry Java Jane - you may be a caffeine addict. But, hey, don’t be ashamed - you’re among the 90 percent of Americans who consume some form of this legal liquid drug. So, is caffeine a friend or foe? BeThree investigates:

Oh-So-Sensitive: Did you know that women have a greater sensitivity to caffeine than men, and it takes us much longer to recover from its effects? And while the jury’s still out on if (and how much) caffeine causes fertility and pregnancy problems, we say stick to the moderation motto: Drink only 1-2 cups of joe per day.

Harder, Faster!:
Caffeine has proven ergogenic (performance-enhancing) effects for high-intensity, short-duration exercise as it boosts alertness, reflexes, and mental awareness that allows you to go stronger, harder, and faster (Yes! Yes! Yes!). And, according to Fay Guarraci, PhD, of Southwest University caffeine may put us in the mood for sex. (M’am, make that a triple espresso, please?)

Freshly Brewed Truth: Are you a caffeine abuser? Marina Kushner, author of the book The Truth About Caffeine says if you gulp down over six cups a day (like twenty one million Americans) you’ll likely experience an onset of irritability, depression, irregular heartbeats and potential problems with the liver, heart and pancreas. (M’am, switch that to a decaf green tea, please?)

Need a Coffee Sub?: Try Tea Spot’s Red Rocks Rooibos Tea, an energizing non-caffeinated South African red tea that’s rich and nutty like its café counterpart. With high levels of antioxidants and its ability to help relieve headaches and irritability, Rooibos is the perfect pacifier for someone who’s putting the kibosh on coffee.
